Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are the leading cause of treatable blindness; this clouding of the natural lens is most commonly part of the aging process, but may be a result of trauma, diabetes, or long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. The only proven effective treatment for cataract is the surgical removal of the diseased lens, usually followed by implantation of an artificial replacement intraocular lens (IOL).

Alcon supplies a wide range of products used in cataract surgery, including equipment to remove the lens, solutions and viscoelastic devices used to facilitate the surgery and protect the eye, and IOLs for implantation in the eye.

Intraocular lenses (IOLs)

Alcon has many styles of lenses to suit all cataract techniques. The highly successful, and well regarded, range of AcrySof® IOLs has been developed to include injectable single-piece lenses, suitable for the latest small incision surgery.

More than 30 million
AcrySof® IOLs have been implanted world-wide

The unique patented AcrySof® material which was specifically developed for use in folding and injectable IOLs, has now been used for more than 14 years, and has been implanted in more than 30 million eyes world-wide. It has excellent biocompatibility which results in very low rates of Posterior Capsular Opacification (PCO) and gives great stability in the capsular bag. This stability makes the AcrySof® single-piece IOL an ideal platform for more advanced optical technologies which rely on accurate, predictable, positioning and freedom from rotation to perform properly. AcrySof® single-piece IOLs are available with Impruv™, a patented covalently bonded yellow chromophore, providing long-term protection from potentially damaging high energy light, without compromising patients’ vision or quality of life.

AcrySof® IQ
IOLs have been developed with aspheric optical correction (just like expensive camera lenses) for improved image quality for patients following cataract surgery.

AcrySof® IQ is a single-piece IOL with aspheric optics benefiting from the unique AcrySof® material and suitable for very small incision surgery.

AcrySof® ReSTOR® is a multifocal IOL which utilises a unique combination of refractive and apodized diffractive optics to provide both distance and near vision for unsurpassed spectacle independence. AcrySof® ReSTOR® Aspheric adds aspheric correction to further improve image quality and further reduce unwanted visual effects.

One instrument lets you provide customized treatment for each patient

The Infiniti® Vision System is a phacoemulsification platform with unparalleled fluidics for the most stable surgical environment. Featuring a choice of energy modalities the Infiniti is fully customisable enabling you to treat patients safely and effectively with a more individualized approach to cataract lens removal.

Available only on the Infiniti, OZil® Torsional Phaco is a revolutionary new approach offering increased surgical control, taking fluidics and ultrasound to the next level. The OZil® Torsional Handpiece creates side to side ultrasonic oscillations of the tip which produce virtually no repulsion, enhancing followability and reducing turbulence when compared to traditional ultrasound. Torsional phaco is designed to increase cutting efficiency across all lens densities as well as reducing the risk of thermal injury.

Also unique to the Infiniti the Aqualase® Liquefaction Device offers a surgically efficient alternative for soft-to-medium density lenses. Pulses of warmed BSS are delivered via a soft polymer tip delineating the lens material eliminating the need for ultrasound energy. Aqualase enables you to ‘power wash’ the posterior capsule for a potentially cleaner and clearer capsule.

Customise fluidics to optimise your preferred technique and take advantage of the new INTREPID® Micro-coaxial system offering smaller less invasive surgery when refractive outcome is critical. The new Intrepid system ensures chamber stability and safety are not compromised and neither is your technique when choosing to move into smaller incision surgery.

Irrigating solutions

BSS Plus® is Alcon’s premium intraocular irrigating solution for use in cataract and vitreoretinal surgery. BSS Plus® helps maintain anatomical and physiological integrity of ocular tissues during surgery. BSS Plus® continues to help protect and support tissues, including the corneal endothelium, even after surgery has finished, by providing glucose (an energy source) and glutathione (an antioxidant) until the natural aqueous humour is reformed.

Alcon also produces BSS® in bottles or bags and in a range of different sizes.

Ophthalmic Viscoelastic Devices (OVDs)

Provisc® Ophthalmic Viscoelastic Device is a sodium hyaluronate cohesive viscoelastic used to maintain space during surgical procedures and is particularly helpful for expanding the capsular bag prior to IOL implantation. It is characterised by high molecular weight, high pseudoplasticity and high surface tension.

Viscoat® Ophthalmic Viscoelastic Device is a chondroitin sulphate/sodium hyaluronate dispersive viscoelastic offering excellent protection for the corneal endothelium. The dispersive qualities of Viscoat® mean that it remains in the eye during surgery, giving unique benefits as a surgical tool.
